What is Turmeric?
Turmeric is a yellow spice from the Curcuma longa plant (member of the ginger family) that is often used in India and Asia in both recipes and as herbal medicine.
Cautions when using Turmeric
Daily use can cause digestive disturbance or promote bleeding in some people and may be contraindicated in those with liver disease. Medicinal use of turmeric is also to be avoided during pregnancy and in patients with gallbladder problems.
Benefits of Turmeric
Turmeric has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory actions (due to the active ingredient curcumin) which can be beneficial in treatment of arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, neurological disease, cancer, and digestive disorders.
Turmeric as a powdered spice is not potent enough for treating specific conditions (best to see your Naturopathic Doctor for a supplement recommendation appropriate for you), but can be beneficial for overall health and prevention.
Simple Turmeric Golden Milk
- 1 cup non-dairy milk (such as almond, coconut, hemp)
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder (about 1 gram)
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon powder
- Pinch of black pepper (increases absorption of turmeric)
- 1/8 teaspoon ginger powder (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (to taste)
- Combine ingredients and blend until smooth.
- Pour mixture into a small pot and heat over medium heat until hot (but not yet boiling)
- Let cool to a drinkable temperature and drink up!
Turmeric, as you may notice, is bright yellow! So, it can stain containers, countertops, clothing, etc. Be careful!
